Carlisle Clinch Interclub Matchplay Championship

Carlisle Clinch Interclub Matchplay Championship

Yesterday the 4 remaining teams in the Interclub Matchplay Championship assembled at a sun-kissed Kendal Golf Club to battle it out for the title.

Following the spell of hot, dry weather the course was playing firm and fast and would provide a test for the semi-finalists. A breeze would be a welcome coolant for the players but was also strong enough to affect ball flights on the elevated layout.

The first semi-final saw Kirkby Lonsdale take on Carlisle A.

Kirkby, represented by Ian Robinson & Ben Turner in the first pairing with Richard Russell & Liam Mason in the anchor pairing raced into an early lead against the Carlisle pairing of Kieran Waters & Alex Park, David Simpson & Andrew Wolstencroft. Through 12 holes the Kirby pairs were an aggregate 4 holes up in the 2 games.

A strong fightback from Carlisle over the closing holes saw them reverse that scoreline to reach the final with an aggregate 4up victory.

The second semi-final pitted Keswick against Furness A.

Keswick's top pairing of Paul Jenkinson & George Curry went out against Furness' Rob Spence & Paul Southward and their game was nip & tuck over the first 9 holes with little between them. In the second game Keswick's Dan Gaskell & Jake Doolin got an early 2 hole lead on Rob Leitch & Isaac Caine.

The back 9 saw the games flip-flop and Keswick's front pair opened up a lead only for the second pair to relinquish theirs. Jenkinson & Curry won their game by 3 holes however, Leitch & Caine fought back strongly and won the last 4 holes in their game to clinch a 5 hole victory that saw Furness progress to the final with an aggregate 2 hole win.

In the afternoon final the line ups remained the same and it looked like being a very tight affair. Waters and Park got themselves in front for Carlisle only for Leitch and Caine to do the same for Furness. And through 14 holes with each team holding a 3 hole lead in each pairing the match was effectively tied.

Another strong finish from Carlisle saw them come out on top. Waters & Park ran out winners by 5 holes against Spence & Southward, Wolstencroft & Simpson won 3 of the last 4 holes to square their match with Leitch & Caine and see the team home with a 5up aggregate score.

President Elect Andrew Kendall presented the trophy to the winning Carlisle team and during the presentation thanked Kendal Golf Club for allowing us to host the event on their course and for their fantastic hospitality extended to both players and officials on the day.
